The Aristotle Metaphysics of Alexander of Aphrodisias 2011-2012

Alexander of Aphrodisias is the only Greek commentator on Metaphysics of Aristotle who is not connected with the neo-Platonic school. He has, on the contrary, played a great part in the Platonic understanding of Aristotelianism. That is to say that it played a fundamental role in the history of the transmission of Metaphysics in the Greek, Arab and Latin worlds, but this role remains little studied.

This seminar, co-organized by a subgroup (CNRS - Université Paris1) of the UMR 7219 and the University of Aix, aims to translate and analyze the authentic part (A-D books) of the commentary Metaphysics transmitted in Greek under the name of Alexander, in order to understand the reading he proposed of Aristotle by situating it in the history of Greek philosophy (Stoician context and influence on neo-Platonic reception of Aristotle) and determining which Influenced his "Aristotelianism" exerted on the later Aristotelian tradition, Arab and Latin.
